Our new addition.....another computer.

Well, Folks, Its my turn. This is Liz, by the way. I now get to build my dream computer. We did Corey's about a year ago, and with all the fun games that should be coming out in the next few months, I thought I'd better get a computer worthy of them. This stupid laptop will never be able to handle Neverwinter Nights 2.
I've spent the last few days doing some research (thanks Dad for teaching me to over-research everything), and here's what I'm thinking:

Processor: AMD Athlon 64 3700+ (San Diego=2.2GHz, 1M L2 Cache)
Motherboard: ABIT Fatal1ty (nForce4 chipset)
Video Card: NVIDIA Geforce 7800GT
Memory: G.Skill 1G DDR 400 SDRAM
Case: Xoxide .....
Power Supply: Aspire ATX-CW500WP4
Hard Drive: Seagate Barracuda 7200.8 200G
CD/DVD Burner: whatever's cheapest at the time
Speakers: Altec Lansing 121i 2.1 speakers
CPU Heat sync & Fan: ....
Monitor: Hyundai L90D+ LCD 19"

So, thats it so far. I could use some advice from the pros on some of these things. So, I've include a list of questions. There will be a test.

1. Do I go with 1G memory or 2G? The benchmarks provided by Tom's Hardware looked like 1G wasn't quite enough, but 2G was maybe too much? Anyone ever heard of G.Skill? Are they reputable?

2. Lots of choices of cases for me. Which of the following do you like best? They're all at www.xoxide.com: X-static 2, x-styler, x-ventilator, x-aviator. My other case option was the Sunbeam Trio, which I love, but it's $73, and I'd still have to get a different power supply (only a 20 pin connector).

3. Any suggestions for a heat sync? The three I've looked at are the Evercool HPC-925, the Titan Venessa, and the Thermaltake Big Typhoon. None of these really wowed me. I want something quiet, but inexpensive.

4. Looking for a good monitor, too. The Hyundai was recommended by Tom's Hardware - its not that exciting for me, though.

5. NewEgg has multiple parts that all look the same for some of these things (notably the processor) - how do you figure out the difference? Also, sometimes I just picked the cheapest one from all the different manufacturers (like on the video card) - is that an ok thing to do?

Anything else you see that stands out as a big problem? I'm not so good at the details here - I was more concerned about matching my red motherboard to the red led's in the case. ;-)

All in all, this comes to about $1400 total, which I think is decent, considering I need everything, including a monitor. Is that a realistic expectation?

I know, I've provided more questions than anything, but this is the first time I've spec'd one of these jobbers out by myself. Take a look, and have fun wishing you were getting this machine. :-)

  • Liz,

Neoseeker is one of the sites I use to find reviews on products. For example, I like Lian Li aluminum cases. A good mid-priced option would be the Lian Li PC-7 and you can find the review and links to other reviews here. Ok, I see the cases you were looking at are in the $30 - $35 range. My only comment is that if the 80mm fans are too loud, you may want to purchase a fan speed controller. The Lian Li has 120mm fans that are quieter.

I think the motherboard and processor that you have selected is top notch. I don’t think you can get any better. Ok, maybe a faster processor, but it’s probably not worth the extra cost. The motherboard is great but I see it comes in three different versions, regular, deluxe, and premium. I don’t know what the differences are, and it doesn’t list them on the Abit website. There are reviews of the three versions on neoseeker that may explain the differences.

I see that the motherboard has a digital optical sound jack in addition to the analog jacks. I purchased Logitech digital speakers and love them. I looked for a low cost 2.1 speaker system with a digital input, but can’t find any. I think as soon as you spend enough to get a digital speaker system you are into 5.1 systems. The Altec Lansing speakers you picked out actually look pretty good for the price.

G.Skill memory? I never heard of them. Why not Corsair or Crucial? If you go with 1GB, make sure you get a match pair of 512MB sticks to take advantage of the dual channel capability.

For your had drive, the Seagate Barracuda 7200.8 SATA NCQ (ST3200826AS) is 1.5Gb/sec. The Abit motherboard has 3.0Gb/sec connectors. I assume that they would be compatible with the slower drive, but you may want to go with the Seagate Barracuda 7200.9 (ST3200827AS). I couldn’t find the 200 GB unit on Newegg, but they have a 7200.9 250GB for $105.

Regarding monitors, I like the Samsung monitors. Something like the SyncMaster 191T or the Samsung 940b would be a good alternative to the Hyundai.

    Good Luck,

    Dad

  • Thanks for the extra information. I'll definitely go with the faster harddrive, and get some 120mm fans.
I haven't seen anything about different versions of the Fatal1ty motherboard - just the SLI and non-SLI versions. I don't think Abit even makes the non-SLI version anymore.
Memory-wise, I was just looking for best prices. G.Skill was mentioned on Tom's Hardware, and its about $10 cheaper per stick. I'm leaning towards 2G - otherwise, I'll just want to upgrade sometime later. With the 1G sticks, at least I can then upgrade to 4G eventually.

  • Bad News!!!
It looks like the Fatal1ty motherboard has disappeared. It no longer shows up on NewEgg's site. How strange. I guess I now need to start over and find a new motherboard.
    Any suggestions?

  • ok. Here it is. My NewEgg wish list with everything I'd buy. Well, I guess I might get a couple more fans, but that would be about it.

    Any last comments?
