My New Box
So, I've been contemplating getting a new computer for some time now. Mine is starting to show its age and I'm getting the itch to build a new one. For Christmas, I got a floppy drive, a CD/DVD drive, and a new case. So, why haven't I built it yet? Well, I've been waiting for the video card I wanted to be back in stock. I just received word that it is. Of course, now that it is, I'm planning on getting a different one - go figure.
Anyway, here is the box I'm planning on putting together. Feel free to take a look at it and let me know what you think. Here's a couple highlights, for anyone that cares.
3.2 GHz P4 processor (LGA775 socket)
1 GB DDR PC3200 Memory
80 GB Hard Drive (SATA)
GeForce 6800 PCI-Express x16 Video Card
You see, I wanted the GeForce 6800 video card, but I had been planning on puchasing the AGP version of the card. Now that PCI-Express is making itself more prevalent in the marketplace, I thought I'd try going that route. I doubt I'll see much difference in performance between the AGP and PCIe cards, but, as most video cards seem to be headed in the PCIe direction, going with a motherboard that supports PCIe will give me better "upgradability" in the future.
Anyway, that's pretty much it for this post. Take a look at my setup, if you're so inclined, and let me know what you think.

I think it will beat the snot out of anthing I've built recently. One thing to note, check out the price for a larger HD, I think it saw a 250GB samsung SATA drive for like $125, which is nuts, if its only like $40 more for that, do it. Then you could copy like dozens of DV...er, I mean pictures and home video to your hard drive for easy burning.
Also, check into some different heatsinks for your CPU, the factory one might not cut it for gamey games cranked to the extreme, and you only get one shot at your heatsink (well, not technically, but its a bitch). Also, maybe some HD cooling, and see what geforce offers in far as graphics card cooling, for sure. Otherwise, I think those summer gaming sessions (as well as cold winter when the house heat is cranked up) could be trouble.

i agree with nate. go for the bigger storage. i have noticed city of heroes had grown ginormous with the last few patches and expansions. for a few bucks more, you will never run out of space.

- The P4 is very nice, but I'm personally a fan of the Athlon 64. But I'd say it's a toss up right now.
- I'd look into the GF 6600GT (if you're gonna spend the money for the 6800, look into dual 6600). The 6800 has a bug on it. One of the big new features was using the GPU to do video decoding/encoding, but it was broke on the 6800 and NVIDIA said they didn't think it could be fixed via drivers (it's fixed on the 6200 and 6600). Also, if you get a dual x16 board, the dual 6600 will beat down the 6800. Though, I'd also be an advocate of getting a high level 5x00 or a lower 6x00 and spending the money you saved 15 months from now on something that would rock the 6800.
- I'd also advocate Ubuntu Linux on it. But again, that's just me =) Ubuntu really made everyone think that Linux might be okay on the desktop again. Everything just works out of the box (except perhaps wireless, which has been getting a lot of love lately).
All and all, I'm jealous. Also, get UT2004. Best game you can buy for the money. The actual game is awesome, but the mods available just take it over the edge.
